Daily dose of opera. A very personal curation. Super opinionated. Don't come here for objectivity.

A moment from the current curation. Let us listen to the finale of Beethoven's #opera Fidelio. Let it embolden us to fight against the fascists- machine without souls cannot take away your god-given humanity. Truth and humanity will eventually win. I promise you that

The King of Ragtime: Scott Joplin wrote a beautiful #opera called Treemonisha. Infusing opera with black folk music, the music is just sublime. I especially love the finale: Real Slow Drag www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdlx....

This account could literally be a Shirley Verett fan account. Her acting is extraordinary- I love her as Lady Macbeth but the way she plays the guilt-ridden Amneris in the #opera Aida- chef kiss. Just watch her expression 4:53 and at 5:44 - so much subtle movements in her eyes.

A little aside from our usual monthly curation: Chapell Roan! With a gun!
Joking aside, but Operavision has the free streaming of the #opera Salome.

It's uh... interesting.

PSA: I would like to say that I am an academic but in STEM - I have no training in the humanities. So when I link scholarly work and offer some opinion, please keep this in mind. I will, however, ensure that I am not twisting the truth.

It is very important to not only enjoy the music, but to learn the full history! The history of Black Americans and opera is closely entwined- we must ensure that we look at entire scope. I really enjoyed this paper, learned about Mattiwilda Dobb!

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! Consider learning about Edmond Dédé an American composer who spent over 40 years conducting in Bordeaux and wrote Morgiane, the earliest known #opera by an #AfricanAmerican composer, which its first staged performances are happening THIS MONTH (138 years later!)

One of my favorite divas- the amazing Shirley Verett. Her voice? Beautiful. Her acting? Amazing- enjoy her Orpheus in Gluck's #opera.

I was bummed I didn't get to see John Holiday when he was in Boston (Mitridate) - he has a beautiful, beautiful voice. I think this is my favorite rendition as he plays Nero in Handel's #opera Aggripina.

My dream is to have my little house. My study would have portraits of the great Divas. Leontyne Price has the greatest portrait of all time.

It is at the National Portrait Gallery (artsandculture.google.com/asset/leonty...)

Jessye Norman - it's just amazing watching amazing musicians perform (Seiji Ozawa is conducting!). They get into their roles. Jessie Norman's voice is pure seductive power, the French she speaks- oof, my heart!

Leontyne Price is one of the greatest Verdi interpreters of all time. Most famous for Aida. Listen to her beautiful, dramatic voice - particularly the 0:19-0:21 is one of her most iconic moments. #opera

February is Black History Month! I will be tweeting about great Black #opera singers, the struggles of reprsentation on stage, and outstanding scholarly work dedicated to this complex history. It’s a reminder of how much further we have to go to achieve equity on stage!
