It took him an embarrassingly long moment to register that they were, in fact, still standing in the hallway: limbs entwined, mouths meeting, the world beyond reduced to an afterthought.

It took him even longer to summon the discipline not to simply devour her where they stood, in their own hallway, before he finally managing to tear himself away.

They parted at last, both of them breathless, grinning in that unguarded, foolish way that made the world feel briefly and delightfully unreal. For a heartbeat, it seemed almost physically impossible to take even a single step back.

That didn't go well, honestly. I have written about it, for #CelesteDekarios upcoming memoir

I felt it—the familiar warmth, the quiet sense of belonging—and when our eyes met, the world seemed to narrow to just this moment. Just us. Just a man with incredibly soft eyes and a lost woman, caught up in more than she was able to comprehend.

It felt more touching than I had expected, more than I had planned for, and certainly more than I was prepared to face.

This was intimate in a way I had not anticipated.

Gale's eyes were dark, gentler than I had ever known them to be. His smile warm, his gaze searching mine with a patience that unsettled me. His lips curved into that particular smile he only ever allowed when he was utterly content, when certainty anchored him. It made sense that he would be happy here, surrounded by magic, his craft. It was summoning after all, something he could trust without hesitation, something that did not demand questions or invite doubt.

And in that instant, I allowed myself to drift. I knew he could sense it—my thoughts, my longings, the wild edge of my desire—but I did not stop it.

I did not want to stop it.

Perhaps more truthfully, I did not want to hide. I wanted him to see me, to feel me in ways most likely no one ever had.

So I gave myself over to the tide—the dream of kissing him, of touching him, of drawing him close until there was nothing between us but breath and hunger. I imagined the unguarded depth of him, imagined lips meeting, bodies pressed close, moving in unison as though answering a call older than either of us.

$Gale flinched. It was not a blush, not exactly, but the sharp flicker of surprise, quickly followed by embarrassment, and then something lighter—almost elation, though fleeting into surprised incomprehension and disbelief. He stepped back, his face faltering, the gentleness of a heartbeat before gone as though it had never existed. And I knew, before the weight of it settled over me: I had broken it. Whatever fragile thread had begun to spin between us, I had unraveled with my longing. With my hunger for closeness, my reckless need for his body, I had reached for something he had no intention of offering. In that reaching, I had fractured the moment. And us with it.$

What could I possibly say? What was there left to say?

Nothing could stitch back together what I had just cracked. I could not hold his gaze for another instant.

So — and I tell you this without pretense — I turned to run.

I could not bear to stand there, to meet the look in his eyes: not the amused look of lovers, not the easy warmth I ached for, but that startled, wounded surprise I had given him.

All I remember offering was a mumbled apology, my voice small and useless against the distance I had createdy between us, and then shutting my tent behind me.

I do not know if anyone noticed. If they did, they were kind enough not to say anything.

Sleep would not come. I turned and twisted beneath the thin blankets, groaning against the thoughts that clung to me like burrs.

Gale’s voice is velvet threaded with laughter, and the smirk curving his mouth could topple kingdoms. He lifts his wine glass with subtle elegance, savoring a slow sip before placing it back on the table with infuriating composure.

You wince—your thighs instinctively tightening as a mage hand slips up the inside of your leg, warm and mercilessly slow through the fabric.

Gale only smiles, all warmth and arrogant delight, perfectly at ease in the midnight-blue suit that fits him like a sin. The crisp white shirt beneath makes him look even more composed while your pulse stumbles, your breath shivers, and your whole body threatens to give you away.

“I am breathing,” you hiss, fingers trembling as you raise your glass.

“Are you?” he asks, tone dripping with false innocence. “You seem a touch… rattled.”
