BUT WAIT. The story isn't over, and we do have a chance to turn the tide. Oregon has an invasive species council to handle things like this before they get out of control. But they need funding, and we've got a solution coming up in the Oregon legislative short session... 1% for Wildlife.

Let's head back to the Willamette today. Two individuals have been found so far. Only two? Not millions? What's the scare about? Well... a single female can carry 250,000–1,000,000 eggs at a time.

In just the fall of 1998, over 1 million mitten crabs were collected in south part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. Let's take a minute to imagine how much that would cost, from labor, to tools, to the cost to repair the damage.

The damage was significant enough that they are now illegal to own or sell in Oregon.

Let's take a gander back to San Fran in the 90s. A significant population of these crabs took hold of the bay, damaging infrastructure like dikes and levees, interfering with commercial fishing operations by destroying nets and eating native fish eggs, and taking over fish salvage structures.

Looks like just another crab? WRONG. Unlike our native crabs, this crab has a potentially devastating skillset... it spends its adult life in freshwater. This individual was found in the Willamette River. Wondering where this story gets scary?

Conservation Leaders Unite to Oppose Steve Pearce BLM Nomination
The Trump pick to lead the land management agency has ties to anti-government extremists

If placed as the Director of the BLM, he would have power over policies around the leasing of land to oil companies. It doesn't take much imagination to picture how that would pan out.
November 19, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Pearce earned a 4% score from the League of Conservation Voters while serving in the House of Representatives. He also grew up in oil camps, has bought and sold oilfield service companies, and oil companies have been top funders throughout his career. So why does that make him dangerous?
November 19, 2025 at 5:24 PM
Setting aside the fact he himself has posted videos illegally felling trees as part of a protest, Pearce openly supported Trump around the January 6th insurrection. He also blamed the Bureau of Land Management when anti-government militia members took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in '16
