Our group refound the East Yorkshire White-throated Needletail at Bempton Cliffs this afternoon. Unbelievable moment when it shot through as we were watching a Barn Owl! Raced down to cliffs to relocate and initially no sign, but it then reappeared and we had it flying over our heads 🤯🤯

Siberian Thrush for both of our Shetland groups today! 👇

Stuff of dreams on Shetland today with great views of the Siberian Thrush at Asta. What a bird for our @oriolebirding.bsky.social group to catch up with. Check out that undertail! #UKBirding #ShetlandBirding

It was a good day for our Shetland tour on Yell and Unst. Highlights included Common Rosefinch, Hawfinch, 4 Glossy Ibis and, perhaps best of all, this confiding Short-toed Lark.

It’s been a good start to our @oriolebirding.bsky.social Shetland tour as a stop at Musselburgh on the way up to Aberdeen produced the long-staying Marsh Sandpiper, White-winged Scoter, Surf Scoter and plenty more! #UKBirding

We spent the rest of our final morning on Shetland y’day checking spots up the west side of Mainland, including the burn of Geosetter. Just a Blackcap seen on the way up, but coming back down this stunning Wood Warbler popped out!

The Blue-winged Teal at Hillwell y’day kicked off the final day of our 1st group to Shetland of the season. We were lucky as it flew in from the south with a group of Teal just as we arrived. Certainly a lot easier to pick out in flight than on the deck!

Taxonomy didn’t ruin the excitement for our Shetland group this morning when we stumbled on this absolutely stunning Hornemann’s Arctic Redpoll up at North Roe with the Isbister sparrow flock! Hopefully a sign that more will be on the way!

Marsh Warbler at Hillswick this afternoon was a just reward for our Shetland group after sticking out some pretty grim weather for most of the day! Very elusive but eventually showed ok - a really buttery one which at times looked more like a Garden or pale Icterine!

My day started in the Broads where the Black-winged Kite performed before meeting up with the clients at Titchwell for an intense but very rewarding three hours out on the reserve before dinner. blueeyedbirding.blogspot.com/2025/09/norf... #Birds

It is fair to say the @oriolebirding.bsky.social trip to Wexford is going well. Sabine’s on the crossing, loads of waders including Buff-breasted, Pectoral, White-rumped Sands and Grey Phals. Glossy Ibises galore and a pair of fishing Ospreys at the mighty Tacumshin.

It’s been quiet on @NRonBirdObs for our three-day stay but we managed to score in injury time with this Common Rosefinch which flew past us while we were driving back from the lighthouse to the Obs this evening, just before we caught the plane!

On our way up to Orkney, and having enjoyed some great Ospreys and White-tailed Eagles along the North-east coast on the way up, we had just enough time before the ferry to stop at Loch Watten where this smart drake Ring-necked Duck was a nice bonus among the Tufties!

Our Colombia tour has just completed with a whopping 460 species recorded but there is no doubt about the highlight - it was a case of right place, right time for us to see one of the rarest and most endangered birds in South America, the mythical Santa Marta Sabrewing!
oriolebirding.bsky.social
One of the highlights of this weeks tour was the Lesser White-fronted Goose flock over at Ken Hill on Wednesday. We were lucky to see them close before a microlight flushed them and they flew straight at us.

Got back from guiding in South Africa last week with an @oriolebirding.bsky.social group. Some fantastic birds seen over the two weeks, here are two species that emit a very different feel to anything we have here in Europe; Acadia Pied Barbet and Cape Sugarbird.
