Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet, and travel writer. He is best known for the novels Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Kidnapped, and the poetry collection A Child's Garden of Verses.

His most famous work, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, depicts the battle between good and evil within the individual. This theme is not only universal but also deeply connected to Calvinist Scottish theology and moral understanding. The Calvinist doctrine prevalent in Scotland emphasizes the sinfulness of human nature and internal conflict. Stevenson transformed this religious/moral heritage into a psychological thriller masterpiece by combining it with Victorian hypocrisy. Stevenson spent most of his life outside Scotland due to his chronic illness (tuberculosis), living in Switzerland, America, and finally in the South Pacific (Samoa). This state of "exile" fuelled themes of alienation, longing for home, and the search for belonging, which are frequently explored in his works. As a Scot, the experience of being "far from home" permeated the spirit of his characters and stories.

Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Born into a family of musicians - 4 generations of maestri di cappella at the Cathedral of Lucca - Giacomo Puccini had music in his blood. His first big success "Manon Lescaut" premiered in Turin in 1893, just a week before Giuseppe Verdi's final opera, "Falstaff".

Puccini became the heir to Verdi as the most in-demand Italian opera composer. "La bohème" (1896); "Tosca" (1900); and "Madama Butterfly" (1904) have become standard repertoire to this day. Puccini's final work "Turandot" was incomplete at the time of his death in 1924. It was finished by Franco Alfano, and published in 1926. It contains the often heard aria "Nessun dorma" ("Let no one sleep").

Nicholas P. Tosches (1949-2019) was an American journalist, novelist, biographer, and poet. His 1982 biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, Hellfire, was praised by Rolling Stone magazine as "the best rock and roll biography ever written."

I had compared his writing style to that of Hubert Selby Jr., James Ellroy, and William T. Vollmann, but that was more to emphasize that he belonged to the class of writers who were never afraid to get their hands dirty. He was unique, damn it. And I'll miss him.
