I'm probably going to put an ortholinear split into my simpit/totally not a goon-station when I'm done figuring out the software and the joystick elements

It feels like a natural fit for how a cockpit in a mech would probably be laid out if you needed to do text entry
osakanone.bsky.social
but in kind of an adorable "I'm Dr Girlfriend and I think seeing your big speeches is very sweet" kind of way
osakanone.bsky.social
tl;dr:

split/tent this is probably shit you don't really need and its basically just a gimmick if you're in your 20's, but if you're in your late 30's or early 40's or you do data-entry or lots and lots of typing you'll find this appealing

otholinear is mainly a gimmick for nerds but I'm a nerd so

here's a decent review of five split boards if you wanna try it

its mostly a "I want to sit at my computer and type almost nonstop for 16 hours" type thing, where you're pushing the limits of what your body will really permit, or to cope w/ an injury

not everybody needs one, thankfully

this is the moonlander btw

its kind of weird, ortholinear (not staggered) which is a saving on the wrist and the fingers themselves

you kinda would need to learn to type on it again (takes about a month) but having had one for two years i feel the benefits

the split helps w/ backpain a ton btw

the hetrosexual heart does not understand love

it only knows the crude propagandized contract of the platonic socialized gender, and the partner is aligned into that model

those who can look at the whole of a partner, not just the parts convenient for them were never hetro to begin with
osakanone.bsky.social
super depends on your needs.

split tented keyboards are super popular for those with rsi or other complications from extended typing sessions.

i have a moonlander, because i'd still like to have functioning wrists and fingers in my 60's during which i still intend to be writing

This is coincidently why cRPGs and jRPGs exist, which actually did fuse adventure games and RPGs.
osakanone.bsky.social
Anything which makes an RPG better at this is bringing in features from adventure games -- eg, skill-checks, which depend on you understanding your scenario or the emotional or social context of what's happening.

Those don't generalize well into models, or stats and are bespoke writing every time.
osakanone.bsky.social
The issue here isn't "wait, why is nobody doing this?"

Its that RPGs fundamentally aren't a format that lend themselves well to these kinds of experiences. Numbers describe material repetitive experiences. They don't describe unique complex emotional experiences very well without becoming cynical.
osakanone.bsky.social
What you want is a dialog driven RPG, with flags.

...Which is a visual novel, with space.

Which is actually not an RPG at all.

But an adventure game, in the classical sense.
osakanone.bsky.social
I hate to use dipshit terminology but points are fungible. Imagine if you could go to the cinema 5 times with a girl and she'd sleep with you. Each time is a mission, has challenges. You're still only doing the mission to get to the outcome. That's cynical again, and works against the experience.
osakanone.bsky.social
I know its very tempting to say "yes, but what about X?"

- Tokens/Points are uniform
- "Cards" aren't, but making them matter is done by narritive so they're just representations of routes or paths
- Flags are really cool, but all they do is switch routes and paths
osakanone.bsky.social
why? because actually writing all of that would just create a visual novel, at which point the entire RPG format dissolves and the numbers just become status indicators -- and likewise, the workload becomes completely massive
osakanone.bsky.social
the same games when on the positive axis are also unappealing because they go from defeating resistance to cultivating artificial acceptance because neumericism is always cynical because each neumerical unit or point is fundamentally uniform in a way real experiences aren't
osakanone.bsky.social
this does exist and has been done, and its why some visual novels have a really shitty reputation and are seen as kind of emotionally unappealing messes
osakanone.bsky.social
the other characters, even though they're not real don't really have that benefit. what this means is you could fundamentally just go around completely raping and pillaging an entire world.
osakanone.bsky.social
within the narritive, the player eventually wins, and then isn't so the consistent thread of the story is they don't, except for when they do wink wink, etc
osakanone.bsky.social
sure, but that's a different dynamic fundamentally:

"losing to girls" is a super common fnatasy so the rape the player experiences done to them is a thing they willfully seek out, and the player can turn the game off or skip segments
osakanone.bsky.social
like i guess in theory you could foot the bill in a positive model of actions which convince your character to be into the other character but at that point that's a huge amount of labour considering how many characters exist, and it also disaligns and others the protagonist from the player.
osakanone.bsky.social
the same reason a front page on youtube can be horribly condescending, boring or just completely misunderstanding you is the same reason sex rpgs need the player to foot the bill of emotional cost and for the score of adding or subtracting to belong to them
osakanone.bsky.social
its also why clammy nerds suck at it, because they want to use models instead of creating direct experiences which can contain failure OR they are fine with failure provided the other party is the one suffering and not themselves
