Covid-19 regressed progress of malaria prevention. There were shortages of nets and testing capacities as well as largely overpopulated hospitals which in turn caused more malaria deaths during 2020. This chaos has since recovered, and efforts are put in to ensure no repeat.

Malaria prevention is moving forward. Monoclonal antibodies may be the future of malaria prevention as they block the parasite with lab made proteins before it infects you and have shown 88% protection in trials.

There is hope in upcoming vaccines like the RTS,S/AS01 which reduces malaria by 36% in kids. As well as the new R21/MM vaccine which has shown up to 77% efficacy. Using vaccines alongside preventive measures is a profound way to combat malaria. 💉🎖️ #MalariaVaccines

Bed nets alone can’t stop malaria. Mass Drug Administration lets whole communities to be treated, demonstrating herd immunity principle. This strategy reduces number of cases, and its effectiveness was shown by how many lives were saved in the Ebola outbreak. 🛏️🦟 #PublicHealth #MalariaPrevention

Malaria treatments have become vulnerable. The parasite is mutating for a greater resistance against core drugs such as Artemisinin. The resistance has spread notably fast in both Asia & Africa. Supervising these changes will help prevent a large outbreak. 💊🛡️ #DrugResistance

A percentage of malaria cases are undetected. Mutations arise in the parasite’s genes which cause rapid tests to fail. ‘False negatives’ mean people are inadvertently spreading the disease. This makes tests like PCR invaluable as quick repeats are easy to do to ensure accuracy. 🔍❌✅ #MalariaTesting

Is malaria constricted to tropical regions? No! Traveller imported malaria is on the rise. Climate change grants mosquitoes the ability to thrive in new environments, increasing risk in areas where malaria ins’t as prevalent. ✈️🌎 #GlobalHealth
