I'd also go as far as to say that Hirohito should by all rights have been hung, too - but it's a sign of the post-war compromise that this is even controversial.

Yeah, and in that sense the UK was fairly uniquely screwed - they may not have lost nearly as much as the USSR in human terms, but essentially paid for victory with their empire. Basically their entire economic system was spent and they really didn't have much else to pay with.

To be fair, it wasn't just a UK problem - all Allied powers, including the US and the USSR, had interest in perpetuating bits of Nazi myth to save reputations and cover up failures of various elements of their own leadership.

And arguably, it was even more egregious in regards to Japan.

I have no interest in Stranger Things, but if this features a free version of Taog's Huey you can generally use - that is one solid aircraft that I actually paid good money for. Worth it for that!

(And no, the Russian Empire cosplaying some kind of Marxist internationalism for 70 years doesn't get a pass - most eastern Europeans always saw it correctly for what it was)

It's incredible to me that anyone looks at Eastern Europe, defined above all by difficult compromises in the face of subjugation or outright genocide by nationalist empires from either side in the last two centuries, and concludes they're just too stubbornly nationalist to know what's good for them.

The real problem being, of course, is that they're not endorse killing their families - they're endorsing killing other people's families while theirs is safe.

The unbombed have never faced these sacrifices.

Transphobia, like other bigotries, comes from an assumption that the world as we know it is the best way things can be arranged. Anyone trying to change the way things are must therefore be trying to cheat the system to make up for their lack of ability

The two somewhat related terms are "hybrid warfare" and "grey-zone warfare" - both heavily leaning into working through non-state actors, coercive use of communications technology, and threats of force (rather than consistent application of force). Russia's been doing this for a while now.

The current in-vogue term for it is "hybrid war".

Hegseth absolutely expects to face zero justice whatsoever for his war crimes because *that is not something the US has ever really done*
