Suomen Akatemia tuomitsee jyrkästi tutkijaan kohdistuvan häirinnän ja vihapuheen.

”In Finland, academic freedom is a core value. Researchers must be able to explore, question and share knowledge openly.”

”Let’s protect the freedom to do science, and the people who make it possible.”
Suomen Akatemian LinkedIn-päivitys:

The Research Council of Finland firmly condemns the harassment and hate speech that RCF-funded researchers have recently faced online.

This kind of targeting behaviour is highly inappropriate and dangerous. It threatens academic freedom, narrows public debate, and undermines trust in science and the people behind it.

𝗜𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲. Researchers must be able to explore, question and share knowledge openly. The RCF funds research through open competition and international peer review, and our staff work to ensure the 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 of the process.

Debate and disagreement are part of a healthy democracy. But there is a line that is crossed when the conversation turns into personal attacks or intimidation.

We call on everyone to help keep that line clear. 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, and the people who make it possible.

In 2023, we released a statement on the online targeting of researchers: https://lnkd.in/dbRrUDBu

Kirjoitimme Anna Grahnin kanssa Tilastokeskuksen tänään julkaisemaan ”Ajan jäljet” -teokseen ulkonäkötyöstä. Ulkonäkötyö on merkittävä osa sukupuolittunutta palkatonta työtä.

My US-based colleagues, FYI:

Finnish Research Council is about to announce a special call to fund researchers abroad to relocate to Finland.

By all means this is not intended to lure you into moving to Finland, it just happens to be planned right now by pure chance.

I made a comic about beauty as a capital in my first year of studying social sciences. It's 11 pages (+sources) this this will be a thread. Nowadays my view on my looks isn't as negative but I'm still insecure about it.

🧵1/3
Comic. Person looks tired. Text: I look this tired every day. This might surprise you but I'm very uncomfortable with my looks. I avoid looking in the mirror when I go to toilet. Covid was a great reason to not think of my looks. Comic, person does make up. Text: I bought a concealer serum. It makes me feel better. But I have to admit I dream of having money for fillers. I try to be body neutral. Positive is too much. Such intense love for one's body seems fake. I know I'm smart, funny and kind. I like my body. I'm strong and my shoulders are nice and wide... but my face. Text: my face exists. If I don't think about it I'm ok. But recently I've had to think about it a lot. I started studying and I'm older than most others. They keep commenting.
Comic, blonde young woman says "Wow, you don't look 35!" Text: it's a compliment. Comic, person with no face. Text: but it makes me feel horrible because it reminds me of the fact that people see me. I don't want to be seen. I used to make youtube videos, but I stopped. When trying to continue, I can't do it. People say "nobody cares about uour looks". They're right and wrong. 1) yes, people who care about me don't care. 2) but I care. 3) research says looks determine a lot of how you're treated in our society. Let's look into the research.

This is an interesting result at a time when obtaining ethical approval for field experiments is not a straightforward matter (at least in Finnish universities). Causing an incentive to move towards the implementation of factorial survey experiments.

Maybe not entirely common sense in the field (yet), but it should be:

Men tend to benefit more from good looks than women.
