I've attached a photo of a map I saw in Vilnius last June, the borders with Russia & Europe in the late 15th & early 16th centuries. This shows clearly that Crimea, Southern Ukraine & all the land around the Sea of Azov were loosely part of the Ottoman empire, not Russia.
