Hi everyone, I wanted to share some sad news about the future of the Verena program. As you know, in September, NSF delayed our annual payment indefinitely, and asked us to keep spending closer and closer to zero until they could "justify" another payment. We began to run out of funds at some universities this month, and will be fully spent out by late spring, so the goal was to get paid in December. We've been working with our program officer to make this happen, but sadly, we've learned we're not getting an increment again, and there's no clarity on when or how much we will be paid in the remainder of the grant (through September 1, 2027). Because of this, the Executive Committee has made the difficult decision to essentially shut the BII down until / unless something changes. What that means is an indefinite end to all programs (e.g., seminar), training activities (integration workshops, trainee corner), and evaluation. On research, what's able to continue will have to be navigated by each investigator; our goal is to work together to push out all the impactful science we've spent three years collecting and analyzing data for, but we also know that priorities may shift around to keep people employed. If we're lucky, Congress will pass a budget that lets us continue doing something like what we planned, and we'll pick that back up when Zoe and Collin are back in April. Until then, Verena will continue to exist as a community where we can collaborate (and give and receive support!), and we're working to find funding sources that can pick up from where the BlI left off. On a personal note: it's been the privilege of a lifetime to work with all of you, and an unbelievably lucky thing to get to run an NSF center in my 20s. I've loved this project, and I hope it's made as much of a difference in your lives as it has in mine. In case I don't see you later: happy holidays, be well, and so long and thanks for all the viruses.

Yesterday, we sent this message bringing a hopefully-temporary end to our NSF center (viralemergence.org) three years into what was originally at least a decade of planned work. We are/were many things at once: a preposterously productive research team; the open science organization for pandemic prevention; a training hub that was creating new paths into the field; and a community that means a lot to all of us. I'm just devastated right now. I wish I could say "the work, at least, will continue" with a straight face. But the people driving this project are (mostly early-career) researchers who U.S. face funding shortages across the board. In-progress work will be lost on fundamental bio, climate change, and pandemic risk assessment. I'm even more devastated on behalf of the (to date, 60+) PhD students and postdocs on the project, many of whom face an immediate funding cliff at the end of the year. NSF had the funds for them and just didn't pay. Death by starvation is turning out to be at least as bad as death by firing squad. Because we have no termination notice, everyone is struggling to apply for bridge funding, and no one is stepping in to save our work, because our project "still exists" even as our labs' bank accounts hit zero. At this point, my job is to fundraise for the amazing scientists I work with, so they can focus on doing some actual science!

American Indian is the term used in govt because evidently it is what is used in treaties. Most folks want to be referred to by their tribal affiliation, which is impossible in this circumstance. americanindian.si.edu/nk360/faq/di...
From the Smithsonian Institution’s website: What is the correct terminology: American Indian, Indian, Native American, Indigenous, or Native? All of these terms are acceptable. The consensus, however, is that whenever possible, Native people prefer to be called by their specific tribal name. In the United States, Native American has been widely used but is falling out of favor with some groups, and the terms American Indian or Indigenous American are preferred by many Native people. Native peoples often have individual preferences on how they would like to be addressed. When talking about Native groups or people, use the terminology the members of the community use to describe themselves collectively.

At first glance, that figure might suggest an abundance of available housing, but for those actively searching for a place to live, it often doesn't seem that way-and for good reason. The study found a significant portion of these vacant properties are not listed for sale or rent. Some are seasonal homes, some are undergoing renovations, and others are simply being held as investments. As a result, the pool of truly available homes is much smaller than the headline number suggests, making the hunt for affordable, accessible housing more challenging than the national stats might imply.

From the author in the comments section of the article: Hi everyone, I became interested in this subject as the parent of two small children and as a product of the 1980s/ 1990s American public school system. I think it can be easy to imagine childhood and school as these timeless experiences that are essentially static across generations. Instead, as I learned from my reporting, there have been dramatic changes. For this piece, I read histories of childhood, education and psychiatry. I also spoke with many people who worry that in trying to get children to learn more, we've lost sight of how they learn best, and even their overall well-being. I'm curious: If you are the parent or grandparent of school-age children, what have you observed? Do things seem different now? And if your child has been diagnosed with one of these disorders, what has that experience been like? What did you learn about vour local school?
