Wildlife rehabilitators often wrap owls so they can be weighed and fed. If not, the owls get in a flap.
The result? Loads of pictures of #owlsintowels https://owlsintowels.org

Found on a busy road, this tiny Saw-whet Owl was scooped up for treatment at JLS Wildlife Hospital at Cornell's College of Vet Medicine. Want to donate to Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital? vet.cornell.edu/giving/ways-... Source: fb.com/279923781863... #owlsintowels #owltober 💛🦉🥝
A tiny Saw-whet Owl is cradled upright in a blue towel. Three hands - each wearing the same type of purple nitrile glove - surround the patient and through the power of deductive reasoning we can say at least two people are present. One hand lightly pinches the owl's legs between their fingers, with long pointy talons emerging from the owl's fuzzy toes like fangs. Fangs of the feet. A stethoscope with a bright-red handle is applied to the owl's chest, looked upon by the owl with cross-eyed astonishment.

A Great Horned Owl is wrapped in a sky blue towel in a grassy outdoor setting. Her danger mittens overhang the edge of the towel, with feathers concealing her sharp talons. The towel, and owl within, is held by a rescuer wearing a dark mossy green shirt. In the daylight the owl's pupils are narrow within their golden yellow irises, and combined with an angular brow gives her a look of intense enmity at the situation. Total mood.

A Barn Owl is wrapped in a light slate-blue towel, head rotated to the side like a model. The rehabilitator wears a khaki uniform, and holds the bundle of towel with their bare fingers. The owl has mostly white feathers except for a heart-shaped band around his facial disc that appears charred on the edges (no fire, it only looks that way), as well as a coat of dark ashy patterning at the top of the head which fades to a collar of speckles around the neck.

Olaf was missing some feathers that affected his ability to fly well enough to catch prey in the wild so became an ambassador at World Bird Sanctuary. Want to donate to WBS? worldbirdsanctuary.org/ways-to-give/ Source: fb.com/120623111273... #owlsintowels #owltober 💛🦉
Olaf the Northern Saw-Whet Owl is wrapped in baby blue cloth that's styled like a head scarf. According to the uploader Paige Bucalo this makes him look like a babushka. His golden-yellow eyes are piercing, pupils wide, and feathers fluffy. What a cutie.

A Screech Owl is wrapped in a towel like a burrito; head popping out from the top, and beak hooked over the edge. The owl's eyes are a pale olive-yellow, and plumicorn feathers point out like a cat's ears at 45 degrees. Perfect triangles. Elsewhere, a gloved hand holds the mauve-taupe wrap from below, and a cartographic map of the globe appears out-of-focus on the wall behind.

It's Spring in NZ, which means LOTS of baby birds. BirdCare Aotearoa is raising funds for its busiest season of the year, to help treat patients like this Ruru Morepork. Want to donate?

Close-up of a Ruru Morepork in a lavender-blue microfibre towel. The background is off-white, and a dark blue plastic box and pencil are sat to the side. The owl takes up 80% of frame though; her eyes are wide and yellow with fluorescent tube lights reflected in each pupil. Her expression appears to be one of surprise, but that's just how a lot of owls look naturally. Her eyelids - and this is the first I've ever noticed this in an owl - are tinged on the edge with yellow pigmentation, matching the irises. Presumably this is also a natural look.

It’s well! One eyelid is half-closed but only because the wrap presses slightly upon it. This was a pre-release check-up, so BPRC returned the owl to the wild shortly after 💛

This Screech Owl's "red morph" variety shows up as shades of cream, light brown and ginger. The buttermilk wrap appears to be purpose-made, with hook-and-loop dots for easier fastening. It pulls around the owl's head slightly and depresses one eyelid over a pale-kiwifruit green eye. The owl is reclined so that the undersides of the feet - called planta or footpads, since they don't have soles the same way humans do - are facing skyward. The owl is atop a black bench and a rehabilitator's hand (in a transparent glove) provides lumbar support. Wooden palings of a fence appear behind.

A Barred Owl is wrapped in a beige towel in a tube-like fashion, with the camera looking down the barrel, so to speak. A rehabilitator's torso and forearms hold the owl with appropriately thick gloves. Only the owl's face is visible and largely obscured at that, but a yellow beak and one dark eye emerge from within.

This Long-Eared Owl appears to be suspended in a sling made from a cream towel. The owl's beak and yellow eyes are wide open - punctuating an expression of shock and annoyance. You can almost hear the screeching through the pixels. Some ruffled head feathers, including the quote-unquote "ears" (which are in fact long feathers) accentuate the owl's wayward look.

Look at this distinguished gentle-bird. A juvenile Australian Boobook is being treated for a wing injury at Kobble Bird Shelter in Queensland 🇦🇺 Source: instagram.com/p/BwnYcsYpgVT/ #owlsintowels 💛🦉
A Boobook is snugly wrapped in a plain earthy-taupe fabric. The owl has brown and gingery feathers with a white brow area, and olive green eyes, each reflecting a ceiling light. The wrap pushes some of the owl's plumage up around his/her neck, like a prestigious feathery collar.

Ruru Owl "Dannevirke" was treated for nerve damage to his left wing. Wildbase bandaged him up, and after cage rest he worked on flight fitness in the aviary prior to release.

A Ruru is wrapped in a teal towel (Windows 95 green), and secured in place by four human hands: two to hold the towel, one to gently brace the owl's head in a sort of upside-down Vulcan salute, and one to hold a stethoscope to the owl's chest. The owl's eyes are yellow and feathers are brown with streaks of mostly caramel and a little white around the brow. The same Ruru looking far more at ease, perched on a small branch of an evergreen tree in the semi-outdoor environment of the Wildbase aviary.

A wide-eyed Boobook owl looks directly at the camera, wrapped in a fleece or felt fabric; black with amorphous white shapes (possibly pawprints and bones - suggesting a dog theme). The setting is indoors and while the background is very blurred, a benchtop and sliding window can be discerned with a blueish natural light cast from outside. The owl OTOH is in sharp focus in warm indoor lighting, with feathers ablaze in golden hues with streaks of white and brown. The owl's eyes are olive green, and the facial disc surrounding them is shaped like a heart.

A Saw-whet Owl is contained inside a draw-string pouch, lime-green with yellow polka dots (the bag, not the owl). Only the owl's head is visible; coffee and cream with yellow eyes. A tuft of feathers at the back are lifted by the bag like a fauxhawk.

A Snowy Owl is wrapped in a lightly patterned towel, with wide yellow eyes looking at the camera. The Snowy Owl turns his head to look up at the handler who is wearing a dark fleece pullover emblazoned with the REGI logo, and a pair of blue medical gloves. A taloned foot appears, looking particularly zylodactyl. A second Snowy Owl is swaddled in a curry powder orange towel, with face and tail feathers emerging above and below. The handler wears light-blue medical gloves and a dark pine green jacket with the REGI logo. The two Snowy Owls, side by side, are held by handlers in winter gear outside the clinic on a snow-covered path. Each owl is bundled in a towel: one faded-coral, the other patterned with Spongebob Squarepants paraphernalia.

A small Northern Saw-whet Owl is wrapped in a white cloth, with only her face visible. The arrangement of fabric could be mistaken for a white rose, albeit one with large round eyes and yellow irises. Her head feathers are a mix of light tan and white with dark streaks. The rictal bristles around her beak are very thin, and look kind of like those wire head massagers. The person holding the owl is wearing a dark jacket in the background but the focus is entirely on the owl, which looks alert and curious.

This owlet meets the category of "torpedowl" being wrapped in a tube of plain white towel and head facing outwards from the cylinder like Thomas the Tank Engine. She is placed in a plastic bowl the colour of warm pastel blue, atop a set of scales. Her face is a little sunk inside the tube, and in shadow which accentuates the yellow of her eyes. Her mouth is slightly open and tongue is visible. Being juvenile there's an extra level of fluffiness to her feathers.

A Great Horned Owl is half-wrapped in a plain watermelon pink towel. Behind, the rehabilitator wears a merlot-red long-sleeve top branded with the clinic logo in white. The owl is held by the feet with a pair of large leather gloves: cream with light purple trim on the wrist and knuckles. The owl, with her yellow eyes fixed on the camera and talons clenched, has an expression that says "You're lucky I'm restrained right now." Variations of the previous photo in a 2 by 2 grid showing the owl's different expressions, although no longer looking directly at the camera. The owl emerges from a pet-carrier in a sunny grassy field, and takes flight for the distant trees.

An Australian Boobook is couched within the loose folds of a towel, much like a Sarlacc finds its nesting place in the Great Pit of Carkoon. The setting is indoors; behind and out of focus is a cabinet of translucent trays, but the picture is primarily composed of cotton towel. Two dark olive-grey eyes and a single beak emerge from the depths, as well as plumage of gingery brown and caramel fudge feathers, which incidentally match the palette of the towel. Stripes of white on the towel match the X or ⵋ shape of white feathers across the bridge of the owl's beak and brow. He looks bitey.
