The rest of the season
Reflecting on the BPAS Pod conversation about the approach to the rest of the season and whether to play loanees or focus on our own players - it prompted me to have a bit of a look at the opportunities for the rest of the season and a sense of what are hopes might be. After 25 games we sit in 12th spot on 35 points - 7 points from 7th, 17 points from 23rd. Historical averages suggest that 72 points are required to get 7th spot, and 46 points required to stay up. Current predictions based on the season so far suggest that 7th might be as low as 69 points and that 47 will be required to avoid the drop. So we need a minimum of 34 points to be in contention for 7th or 1.6 points per game (and for the 'glass half empty' view, 12 points or 0.57 points per game). The teams between us and the last play-off spot are: Grimsby, Crewe, Colchester, Chesterfield and Notts County. Looking backwards and the form table we are above all of these teams over the last 6 games; and only Colchester and Notts County are above us in the 12 game form table. Over the form tables looking at the last 12 games we are averaging 1.66 points per game...which if we extrapolated until the end of the season would see us finish on 69.86 points i.e. right on the edge of the potential 7th place. Looking forwards we would need to get 16 points from the next 10 games...below is I think a realistic prediction for how our next 10 games might turn out. Barnet (away) - 1 point Barrow (away) - 3 points Cambridge (home) - 1 points Swindon (away) - 0 points Fleetwood (home) - 3 points Bristol (home) - 3 points Gillingham (away) - 1 points Crawley (home) - 3 points Bromley (away) - 0 points Tranmere (away) - 3 points P10 W5 D3 L2 = 18 points What do you think? I think in the end it may well be a bridge too far by the end of the season, it would indicate that our season might be 'live' and interesting right up to the wire.
