Ernest has a surviving service record with Joe and Elizabeth as next of kin on it and an address in Wortley, Leeds , which tallies.

Born 1865.Enlisted in the 7th (Leeds Rifles) Bn West Yorks Regt, as number 34, with indicates previous service
as Volunteer. Renumbered as 265002 in 1917. Reason for discharge “Sickness”. No evidence of service outside of UK. His son Ernest appears to have served in the Labour Corps.

Clasp and Roses to the 1914 Star issued in May 1928, as they had to be applied for separately. India service confirmed by 1919 India General Service medal issue.

Landed in Belgium with 2nd Bn at Zeebrugge in 7th Div. Medal Rolls indicate service later with 1st Bn in India.
