'Mākereti Papakura has been a legend in our family for over a hundred years'

On Saturday 27 September, descendants of Mākereti Papakura proudly accepted her MPhil in Anthropology, honouring her legacy as a pioneering Māori scholar nearly a century after she began her journey.

A ceremony at The Oxford University Museum of Natural History @morethanadodo.bsky.social featured a karanga (a traditional Māori chant or call honouring the dead), a haka pōwhiri (a ritual of acknowledgement) plus speeches & performances from representatives of Mākereti’s iwi (tribe) Tūhourangi.

Tragically, she died very shortly before presenting her thesis.

On Saturday, her degree certificate was given by Vice-Chancellor Professor Irene Tracey to one of Mākereti’s descendants, June Northcroft Grant.

This weekend, it was very special to witness the award of a posthumous MPhil in Anthropology to pioneering Māori scholar, Mākereti Papakura @ox.ac.uk

Mākereti began her studies at Oxford almost 100 years ago, exploring the customs of her people of Te Arawa from a female perspective.
