lets say every pixel will hold 8 bit image color and remaining will be used for directions
16777216 / 256 = 65536, so every pixel can hold color data for 65 thousand directions...

just slap a huge ahh cube.
if player is inside the cube send a ray to check if there's anything between.
additionally you can check the distance beforehand to make field of vision not a cube but more circular👍👍
