"The activities of organizations hostile to the state are to be treated with the greatest harshness. Police office who make use of firearms in the exercise of their duties will be covered by me without regard for the consequences of that firearm use."

Not saying I'm going to be the hero. God knows that aint me. But I pray I'll not do nothing. That's why every day I gotta ask myself, Who are you? What do you stand for? What will you not tolerate?

I would never advocate violence, of course. That's what they want. But getting your body in there. Getting between people. Jail is miserable. I spent 30 days once in some shithole for drugs. But a few weeks or months is nothing compared to the lifetime you'll spend wishing you had that moment back.

We're all going to see this, sooner or later. Ask yourself, What am I going to do when I encounter this? The chance to do the right thing will last a few seconds, then it will pass. And you'll spend the remainder of your life thinking about the choice you made. Gut check time.

Him and his supporters flog the veteran thing. There are other, more durable marks of character. Every veteran who has done difficult duty knows how murky the whole experience can be. I don't trust anyone who waves that flag in our faces, without a trace of ambivalence. It's revealing.

When running for office, there should not be "bonus points" for being a veteran. It should surprise no one when I say that lots of lowlifes have served and are serving, and that military service does not enhance your moral stature. Speaking as an Army veteran.
