Then throw in fitter strong players, 5 subs and better pitches

Oh well at least the kits are better fitting now 😂

The freeze frame is just to illustrate a technical coaching point, that’s not really that basic a point. But everyone is an expert 😂

Fair enough. I’m looking at it from the perspective of a keeper I know which type of effort I fancy my chances with.
January 2, 2026 at 2:55 PM
Blocking, holding and obstructing the keeper until 2 seasons ago felt about right. Now it’s legitimised. It’s now done in a way that prevents counter attacks.
Arsenal we on to this early.
January 2, 2026 at 2:38 PM
If we finish in a CL position yes.
Key point and to be pedantic, he’s Head Coach not manager. Too many questions that relate to things outside his responsibilities. Since PSV he show signs he can adapt + find solutions. Can he now open up style without breaking things is tough. No quick fix
January 2, 2026 at 2:30 PM
It’s silly how holding is officiated. The tolerance level is higher than almost any other form of contact. In general it’s spoiling the game and probably leading to counter intuitive things like incentivising set pieces.
January 2, 2026 at 2:15 PM
This shot is as near to the moment he heads the ball as I can find. It’s not delivered that fast and he has plenty of opportunities to see it. He just gets himself in the wrong position, he makes decent contact but because of his position he directs it square.
January 2, 2026 at 1:50 PM
I played in goal for 30+ years, plus coaching, obviously not to that level, but had a front seat view to this type of chance. At that level it’s a sitter. If he has a weakness it’s around the 6yrd box, runs and positioning.
January 2, 2026 at 12:46 PM
I love the player and rewatched it from different angles, it was a terrible miss. I’d expect an overweight middle aged striker playing Sunday morning on Hackney Marshes after walking straight from the pub to effortlessly score. If it was Nunez it would probably be the main social media topic today.
January 2, 2026 at 12:39 PM
👍
Exactly.
I haven’t checked the stats this season but feels like fewer teams are winning games by more than 2 goals. Fewer goals are being scored from open play. Margins are smaller.
It’s not football we’ve seen -cue football hipsters of Italian and Portugal league football 😂
January 2, 2026 at 12:14 PM
Let’s zoom out: A wider tactical shift is under way toward low-risk, percentage football. Transitional play has flipped from a weapon to a vulnerability to be exploited.
Arsenal spotted this seasons ago; Pep is evolving; Slot is recalibrating mid-rebuild. Overall football is just duller and tighter.
January 2, 2026 at 12:01 PM
Technically you and I are 1 one signature away from signing for the club 😂
Never seen him play, I’m told he’s good as we definitely need another CB. Konate metamorphosis into Lovren has halted but is only a matter of time before it returns.

👍
I genuinely I find moment like this interesting. These are the moments we learn. Challenge our analytical skills. Test character. It’s hard work.
I respect Klopp more for his abilities to learn and adapt, Pep the same. Slot is showing similar signs but still early stage.

We’re in a dog of a league, that’s super competitive, whilst rebuilding a squad, also throw in the disruption of a tragedy.
Yes, we spent a lot of money but EPL clubs spent £3.19billion in the summer, a record by 650m.
Slot just needs to hit CL qual’n.
Questions should be directed to the club
January 2, 2026 at 10:44 AM
I agree.
I suspect it’s still the plan, but is on hold. The priority is box the centre middle and centre to provide defensive solidity. I don’t think that’s finished.
But there were still moments especially 2nd half when someone should have been positioned wide on both touchlines
January 2, 2026 at 10:06 AM
Against Wolves I felt Kerkez showed signs but Wirtz was the facilitator to that. Kerkez sort of needs someone who trusts him to do it.
Like you my perception was FB would do that this season. There’s still time. We’re still trying to build something that controls the game and is tight defensively.
January 2, 2026 at 1:27 AM
After 19 games last season City were 6th. Some calling for Pep to leave. B’mouth were 7th, and Iraola lorded, they are now 15th.
We’re 4th now
Slot isn’t perfect, but since PSV he adapted and tightened things up. It’s just dull. That happens. Are things fixed, no. Is manager change the fix, no.
January 2, 2026 at 1:13 AM
Agree more width is required, but don’t think we have the type of wide players required.
I’ve looked forward to AFCON to see Frimpong. He’s making crosses but: 1. No-one is making a front post run; 2. not enough players making runs. Done well it’s low risk and effective.
January 2, 2026 at 12:39 AM
City last season spent ~£350 last season, and ~£170 in the summer.
This time last year they were no better than us now.
I raise the comparison because how the game is changing. It’s tighter, generally duller, low scoring. And what makes us unique from that change and friction of squad transition?
January 2, 2026 at 12:15 AM
Thanks — interesting to know. There’s a lot of frustration, but if you zoom out, the way the game is played is changing. It’s not always pretty, but it’s still elite technically and athletically. The answer isn’t simply “press harder, pass quicker” — that helps at times, not overall.
January 2, 2026 at 12:01 AM
Are there fewer goals being scored and or the open play xG down this season?
To my eyes I’m watching football in this league that feels more low risk, percentage stuff that harks back to football from another generation, just done at a more intense level, on better pitches.
January 1, 2026 at 11:38 PM
I hear your points. My question to you is who is actually performing consistently well and unpicking low blocks in the league?
January 1, 2026 at 11:25 PM
All fair points.
I’d add there’s lots of discord about the performance but in the context of this season, football is just generally duller and uglier across the league. Everyone is engaged in low risk, percentage stuff. As you elude to set piece quality is just more important.
January 1, 2026 at 8:37 PM
His pace is exceptional but the quality and variety of crosses is equally impressive. As you say someone needs to make the near post, another hovers for the cut back and another to cover the near post miss. All can be done with minimum risk of a counter.
