Is it? I’m a pasty middle aged fella, so perhaps partially blinded by proximity, but I thought the female and younger (and older for that matter) characters were written with a decent degree of empathy and realism. Felt like an accurate snapshot of a country town in cusp-of-collapse Ireland to me.

Meant to say ‘each’ gets their own novel within the book… Even my own copy has a backstory: it looks ragged because it was stolen in a smash & grab from my car in the Wicklow mountains, but the thieves lobbed it out the window as they riffled through my bag while driving off & I found it by the road

Morning Womble. Just finished The Bee Sting by Paul Murray - both brilliant, and a bit infuriating. Murray’s ability to create complex characters is exceptional though - gets virtually their own novel within this masterfully written book. Say what you want about the ending, but it will haunt me.
