Does anyone really know what time it is?
Tweaks in Springtime worked well enough but the rio scene is a pump fake, as is them going to jail. I think the truly great ending of the 1968 movie is dispelled here to give them a happy ending that they in no way deserve. The only karmic justice is they go on to ruin plays for decades to come.

As mentioned, turning ulla into an actual character is great! They really don't explore a love triangle, but it works well. Franz having a more direct role in the show is fun, but I do miss him being completely bamboozled on opening night.

The lines lifted from the original come off cheeky at best and stilted at worst, a lot of this hangs on MB not being Gene Wilder and that character also not really working even in 2005. I love they give him literally any motivation outside of being person'd by our sleezeball

Plot: thank god we cleaned up the beginning (mostly) and picked up the pace. This movie has things to do and songs to sing and doesn't waste your time with yada yada. Though, there seems to be a dare to fit the entire original script in this movie as-is which I respect to a fault, but misses plenty

Honestly I miss the original roger debris and his assistant, loved their extra songs here but it felt like an odd pick, especially when the plot diverges adding a lot more debris. All of those parts are fun, but left me wanting. Also miss the original hippie guy they got, he was fun!

Uma rules! She's wonderful in this! Really fleshing out a cardboard cutout from the original. Will Ferrel (my goat) in the same vain adds more screentime to a great nothing character. Always a riot

Matthew Broderick however seems to have watched Gene Wilder scenes from 1968 and copied that character verbatim. Which in all of the modernizing, why that spaz tick wasn't changed I can't figure out (more on the plot 🧵) MB's singing is incredible and I loved his songs, just didn't like his not that

Cast: I wish I would have known that the 2001 musical was also run with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. Showing once again, people were betting on MB to be a big something at the time (Godzilla, Inspector Gadget). Nathan Lane absolutely owns every second he's on, stunning talent and comedy chops.

America is a land built on broken promises and conmen. I love a good scheme, let me in on it! When they almost pull it off, you kind of want them to getaway with it. When they don't, you're happy to wag the finger at their ghoul behaviors. The audience always wins!

The musical number (and bonus one at the end) is dynamite, but makes you wish the whole movie was just that. Can definitely feel like the rest of the movie is in the wake of money shot.

To be clear, you're looking for immersive world or snowy environs or fantasy setting, or all three?

It's great wrestling logic, but like imagine if the ceo of magic pulled out new cards on you in the tournament. Then they all treat joey like an idiot for not knowing magic bullshit #4
