My mom recently spent several days in the ER in an otherwise full hospital. No sandwiches, but a nurse saw my glassy eyes on day 2 and sent me down to the cafeteria. “It’s nacho bar day,” she said, and insisted I go for 30 minutes. Saved my life AND mom’s. (We’re all fine now too.)

My mom recently spent several days in the ER in an otherwise full hospital. No sandwiches, but a nurse saw my glassy eyes on day 2 and sent me down to the cafeteria. “It’s nacho bar day,” she said, and insisted I go for 30 minutes. Saved my life AND mom’s. (We’re all fine now too.)
I saw this when it originally aired. I was 4 years old, and more than 50 years later I can confirm that it was life-changing, even to a preschooler.

My Grammy was a carhop at the Igloo in the early 1940s—she was 18 when she started. They didn’t wear roller skates there, but she did have a mini skirt uniform and majorette boots! This photo is one of my most prized possessions.
