BRINGING HOME A GOLD MEDAL IS A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE WE REPRESENT MORE THAN JUST OURSELVES-WE REPRESENT EVERY PERSON BACK HOME. FOR MANY, COMPETING AT THIS LEVEL IS A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY. THE USA DEAF MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM HAD NOT WON GOLD SINCE 2009, ENDING A 16-YEAR DROUGHT. THIS YEAR, WE FINALLY BROUGHT IT BACK. WHEN I WAS SELECTED AS THE HEAD COACH FOR THE USA DEAF BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THE 2025 DEAFLYMPICS, I MADE A PROMISE TO ASSEMBLE THE BEST 12 PLAYERS POSSIBLE AND PREPARE THEM FOR THE JOURNEY AHEAD. I KNEW IT WOULD BE CHALLENGING. OUR PLAYERS LIVE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, AND THE UNITED STATES IS SIMPLY TOO LARGE TO GATHER THE TEAM FREQUENTLY. WE HAD JUST ONE YEAR TO PREPARE, SO EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN TOGETHER MATTERED." -DAVID HAMILTON "Funding was another major obstacle, as we did not have full financial support for flights, training, and other essential expenses. With determination, I was able to secure enough funds to cover some of the costs so we could keep moving forward. Because of financial constraints, we worked hard to secure funding for one final week-long training camp in Tokyo right before the Deaflympics. That preparation proved to be one of the key reasons we were able to win gold. From day one, our mission was clear: prepare, train, and be ready. We knew that without multiple training camps, our chances would be much lower. Other countries had significant advantages—they practiced together often, competed in regular games, and received financial support for their training. Palomar College trustees voted to delete BP 3000, the school’s antiracism policy, citing vague legal concerns—raising questions about transparency and equity.

“Any removal of our anti-racism policies is racist,” Swan II. said. “It is pompous, blatant, and disrespectful.”
