Absolutely! Argued this in my now ancient Broadview edn. of Memoirs, co-edited with Gina Walker, so I'm unpopular too. It has always been easier to demonize Godwin than understand him. Very touching letter where he admits to an error judgement in terms of timing.

Thanks much for chapter ref. Hard to answer your question in a post. Drop me an email?

I asked for chapter ref. merely for curiosity & my own interest in land ownership - would be most grateful if you would be willing to share. Online texts inaccessible to me for disability reasons. 2/2

Thanks: wasn't questioning her veracity. The passage caught my eye because it is an oblique reference to the 'new' Highland economy (i.e. post-Clearances) which took off in the early 1820s, & which also interested Godwin. LM shadows Godwin's concerns in the 1820s so very closely. 1/2

Some of the Murray lands were confiscated after the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, tho' retrieved by the time of the 4th Duke ... just wondering what point MWS is making.

Page/chapter ref? Which edition are you using? Is the ref. to the 4th Duke?

Lovely, sensitive photos - thanks for sharing. The view down the Tweed from the Royal Border Bridge, waiting to enter the station? Takes me back.
