Final session of my 19th C unit for my brilliant mature students tonight so thought I'd dress as a Victorian heroine to entertain them. Its been such a blast to teach these brilliant students and awaken a new love of Victorian fiction in (most of) them. Finishing with Dracula so trying Mina vibes.

Lovely retreat today for the University of Bristol CoSEM CDT at DesignWest on the harbour side. Everyone has gone for lunch so I'm admiring the view while I guard their laptops....

Did you know that I run writers' retreats for PGRs & academics? So if you are looking for a way to offer a quiet space to write in a healthy and productive format that breaks the isolation of writing, get in touch. I do one day and residentials.

Thank you so much to @lottelouisa.bsky.social for a fascinating talk on beer consumption of Central European women tourists at today's @womenandalcohol.bsky.social seminar. So interesting to hear about the manner in which these women talk about drink and drinking in their private diaries

Had a great time @bavs-uk.bsky.social last week. Not been for a long time and was really impressed by the quality of the papers and the great chats I had with so many. Thanks also to my PhD sister @jendeavour.bsky.social for getting this pic of me in action, probably laughing at one of my own jokes.

Yes. Why is it always pink? Although I did treat myself to a very purple keyboard last week and I LOVE its ridiculousness

This is an amazing idea. I have two for reasons I'm not going to go into. One is my trusty old Kensington (pictured here with jazzy background in honour of your dreams) and the other a very fancy one with extra buttons someone bought me. Kensington wins every time.

Every year I run a few retreats in the summer at the beautiful university of Bristol botanical gardens (botanic-garden.bristol.ac.uk). Every year they get more established & more beautiful. I've run 2 this week for different groups and we have all been delighted by the plants, flowers a& dragonflies

Our next Think While You Drink features @philmellows.bsky.social in conversation with our fellow organiser & beer expert, Prof Sam Goodman, about his new book @beerbreaks.bsky.social at the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer (22 July at 6.30pm). A great place to get tips on good British holiday beers!

Someone asked me how they could find my writers' retreats. I've recreated my diary of events to help you find me. Many are 'invitation only' but some are more open & some organisers generously offer extra places to others: writingwithpam.wordpress.com/diary/
Or you can book me yourself of course.

Final panel of the #dangerouspleasurea conference is on women and temperance. First panel is a fascinating insight into the work on Seventeen magazine by Catherine Carstairs and Aidan Hughes giving advice to teenage girls about their own drinking and the drinking of other girls, boys & their parents
June 20, 2025 at 3:00 PM
Next up on the defiant pleasures panel is @jameskneale.bsky.social talking about the story of Jane and William feast and how their trial fits with wider attitudes to drunkenness and temperance. Excited to see the cover of his forthcoming book due out later this year share.google/lFABuT8ekP2s...

Final paper for the second panel of the day at #dangerouspleasures conference from Hannah Hallieell on female drinking in French art of the fin de siecle. Wonderful pictures of course. Here are two great examples for comparison between representations of male and female drinking
June 20, 2025 at 11:06 AM
Great example of this are these two pictures she brought together to demonstrate this. Zoom in to see the similarities and differences
June 20, 2025 at 10:48 AM
Panel two reflects on visualizing pleasures. Megan Bennett starts with a brilliant reading of the land lady in literary and visual cultures of 18C
