Before Ballbylon's fall, Physicist's research was well-funded by Tactician, but their relationship was always professional. Since then, Physicist thinks he has a classic pal-around friendship with Tactician, while Tactician is simply too polite to tell Physicist to GO HOME.

Shieldbearer, a refugee child, was taken in by the Cohabitants after his parents succumbed to illness. They were not warm or affectionate, but they were dutiful. It is this quality which informs Shieldbearer's stalwart attitude to defending his adopted home.

Itchy's disgrace is a bit anticlimactic - he accused Juggler of numerous crimes, based on shoddy evidence & hearsay. The fall has required Itchy to confront his bias against artists. Their new friendship may yet lead to the truth - his evidence was so close to leading him to the Spendthrift!

Who radicalized the Radical? His former commanding officer! Circumstances have forced these two to work together, in a relationship similar to the one between John Rambo & Col. Trautman. Tactician's respect falls on deaf ears; Radical is uninterested in any more of his fancy words.

Both Embedded & Repentant were foreigners to Ballbylon pre-fall. Both are primarily solitary beings who appreciate being alone with their thoughts. Yet there is still a comfort in being alone together. They will never question how the Repentant's regret is related to the Embedded's condition.

...or if, say, a certain disgraced deputy were still obsessed with gaining back his reputation, & saw value in revealing why the Shieldbearer nearly died in a botched attack the day of the fall. Even though Itchy has his suspicions, he never tips his hand, & is nothing but admiring towards Shade.

Physicist hates Cogitator the least, but still dislikes him. Their interactions together will seem familiar to anyone who has ever watched 2 characters so overconfident in their narrow expertise that they think it makes them smart in general. In my head they sound like Newman & Frasier.

Tactician is absolutely enamored with Empty Nester, but knows & accepts she's not interested in him romantically. He still values the time he spends with her - not knowing she bears a secret grudge against him, since her children were often "acceptable losses" in his pre-fall war campaigns.

Warrior was a Ballbylon native that became a wandering mercenary; Shieldbearer was a refugee that claimed Ballbylon as his home. The two were bitter rivals prior to the fall. Working together has helped them settle their differences, & the Warrior has a newfound appreciation for his place of birth.

Spendthrift was one of Juggler's most enthusiastic patrons before the fall of Ballbylon, which Juggler appreciated but never really acknowledged. They have the most fun together on missions, and Juggler has grown to appreciate Spendthrift's flamboyance.
