Pie night done. Three vegan pies: cranberry-frangipane, pumpkin, rustic apple tart. I should tear up bread for croutons.
On a stovetop are three pies baked for thanksgiving tomorrow. The closest is a cranberry-frangipane tart, dotted with exploded whole cranberries. The middle is a dark brown pumpkin pie. The farthest away is a rustic apple tart baked without a pie tin, the crust folded over the edge to hold in thinly sliced apples. Some of the apples are a little burnt.

Took a walk yesterday out at Sky Meadows through second-growth oak-hickory woods. No tuliptree but oddly quite a lot of pawpaw, so maybe more mesic than not. Beautiful day.

In the driveway wood chip pile it's Leucocoprinus cepistipes! common across N America and loves growing in decaying wood esp mulch.

A little timeline cleanse with some of the native plants spotted along Four Mile Run in Arlington today.
Impatiens capensis, jewelweed flower and leaves, commonly found along shady streamside. A set of small orange flowers arch gracefully from the top of the stem over green leaves with slightly wavy margins. A view of the slope into a stream, with multiple plants including young pawpaw (Asimina triloba) saplings, white aster (Eurybia macrophylla) and some ferns and sedges. Understory plants native tthe area Many small purple flowers arrayed at end of stems of Desmodium paniculatum, panicled tick-clover. The arrangement is called a "panicle," thus the name. A common but pretty plant Arching flower stalks of Persicaria virginiana, jump seed, with tiny white flowers attached directly to a vertical stem emerging from the top of the plant. Called "Jumpseed" as the seeds come shooting out if touched.

No reason to post both books except I finished both of them the other day -- the Chandasekera after five months (held off finishing it for an age, it is very good and very dense) and the Mohamed in a day. And loved both and will be haunted by both for a while. Highly recommended.

Visited a bee visiting the clematis while visiting the Arnold Arboretum.
A bell-shapex purple clematis flower hangs down from a climbing vine. Other flowers are around it among the clematis leaves. A bumblebee is coming out of the bottom of the flower.
