The Cult of the Winged Serpent worshipped a wyvern they mistakenly thought was a god, and fed it 'willing sacrifices' thinking they'd gain spiritual immortality. Constantine was one of the sacrifices, but panicked and killed Llazurios mid-swallow by tearing through his throat.

Constantine - Tiefling Paladin Constantine was raised by a cult who willingly sacrificed themselves to their god, Llazurious, in the belief that they would gain immortal spiritual life. However, when Constantine was chosen for this honor, he panicked and ended up killing the serpent deity. In the aftermath, he learned that Llazurios wasn't a god at all - just a well-fed wyvern. In the relevation of his god's fallacy, Constantine realised just how precious life was. He dedicated himself to protecting the lives of others; in some ways, to make up for all the lives that had been unknowingly wasted by his fellow cultists.
