Years ago someone pointed out bands in the sky like this and explained what they are. That was a long time ago and I've forgotten the explanation, but here they are again! (This is facing northwest, early in the morning, so they are not sunbeams.) Can someone tell me again what's the dealio here?

This one from my kids' Gold Medal Flour cookbook was a family favorite. The dill pickles and pickle juice truly make the pie! I'd use cheddar cheese because cheddar and dill and beef together are somehow greater than the sum of their parts
Quick Cheeseburger Pie Pat-in-the-Pan Pastry (below) 1 pound of ground beef 1/2 to 3/4 cup of finely chopped onion 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 cup of Gold Medal all-purpose flour 1/3 cup of dill pickle liquid 1/3 cup of milk 1/2 cup of chopped dill pickles FLOUR 2 cups of shredded American or Swiss cheese (8 ounces) 1. Heat the oven to 425°. Prepare pastry; pat in bottom and up sides of quiche dish, 8x2 inches, or round pan, 8x1½ inches. Bake 15 minutes. 2. Cook and stir beef, onion and garlic in 10-inch skillet until brown; drain. Sprinkle with salt and flour. Stir in pickle liquid, milk, pickles and 1 cup cheese. Spoon into dish. 3. Bake 15 minutes; sprinkle with 1 cup cheese. Bake until crust is golden brown, about 5 minutes longer. Makes 4 to 6 servings. Pat-in-the-Pan Pastry: Mix 11/3 cups of Gold Medal all-purpose flour and ½ teaspoon of salt. Cut in 1/2 cup of shortening with a pastry blender until mixture looks like tiny peas. Sprinkle in 3 to 4 tablespoons of cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring with a fork after each addition. Mix lightly until all flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans side of bowl (add 1 to 2 teaspoons water if necessary).

An I-Dont-Want-To-Cook meal that turned out pretty good even tho or maybe because it required more cooking than I'd intended to invest:
Rotisserie chicken shreds
Pre-made roasted root veggies
Instant mashed potatoes
Improvised cornstarch gravy
I shoulda thrown in some frozen greens too

Our little town had a great turnout, 700 people! That's basically the whole town. We posted up on Hwy 101 waving at drivers and had 90% positive response from cars passing by. It was a great event. (If you zoom in you can see how far down 101 goes)

What a fun book. I was especially impressed by phase 4 of the owl on page 40. I didn't know they had a naked lady phase! Puts owls in a whole new light
1. The evolution of the owl drawing starts with a rectangle. 2. The rectangle is portioned into a square at the top and a much smaller rectangle at the bottom. 3. The top square is given additional detail. It almost looks like the top of a dress with a plunging neckline. 4. Two circles are added to the chest portion of the low-cut neckline. Hang on, is this a naked woman? Shaping is added to the middle/body rectangle, giving the appearance of a waist and hips. Lower down shading is added to give the appearance of...legs? 5. Further shading is added showing that the top portion is the owl's head with its two large eyes, the middle portion is the owls body with its feathery markings, and the bottom portion is its tail.

Have I already mentioned how GOOD this stuff is? I got it at a very local little grocer, so maybe it's just a local thing. It's from Trazza Foods in Tualatin, Oregon, and it is delicious. Makes everything better. Maybe not ice cream...but also, maybe?

This is a solid ball made of aluminum foil. I made it accidentally by putting a sheet of balled up aluminum foil in my dryer to minimize static (it works!). Long ago I saw someone post about making a ball like this by hand, but I can't remember who. Was it you?
A shiny aluminum egg-shaped ball resting in the palm of my hand (would that be called an ovoid?). It's about an inch and a half tall. It's reflective, but not not entirely smooth.

At the same time, I recognize that part of my audience - and I would say an important part of my audience - is people who have never enjoyed that respect. People who, in fact, are subjects of the kind of hate that Charlie Kirk was harvesting. And I can't ever a) contribute to making them feel like they've been abandoned, and b) I can't ever stand by and watch somebody do that and in the name of unity or whatever, act like that's not happening. Because there are real consequences. So, when I read his words toward trans people -- Jesus The language toward Haitians, specifically, which was: Haitians will become your masters if you don't elect Trump. I mean, this is very, very familiar to me. It's this idea of Haitians or other immigrants coming into the country, raping your daughters. This was really, really, really dark stuff. It's at the core of this country. So, I feel for Haitian immigrants who are in Ohio, who are living under the weight of this. For trans kids who are dealing with being - I don't even want to use the term "bullied" _ beaten up, attacked, threatened It's very, very important to me, given the post I have, to say: I see you. But also: This dude was wrong. rm all for unifying, I'm all for bridging gaps, but not at the expense of my neighbor's humanity. I just can't.

My kids and I visited one of the largest trees in the U.S. yesterday. It's growing in a beautifully preserved and easily accessible bog in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. Absolutely stunning and humbling. My photos don't even come close to doing it justice.
