Alicorns can live a long time, but by the time Celestia banished her Luna, it had been 2000 years. She thought the ponies deserved a better princess when she was gone. She reanimated a statue imbued with her magic to carry out her duty until it found a new ruler.

Nightmare is an unfinished clone of Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon was creating clones before she was banished. Because she was expelled before Nightmare was made, she became sentient with some attributes from Nightmare Moon. Like living forever and eating nightmares of ponies to live.
