Old fool with delusions of adequacy.
Time to catch up before seeing the third film. I wasn’t feeling it for the first half hour but it really ramped up in the second half.

Not great. Trying to be a fogbound British noir but Cesar Romero is acting in a different film altogether

I see that and raise you this…

The Eagle’s Nest. Smart idea to go full Fourth Reich on a remote island and get Peter Cushing in there for the first episode. Helps cement the Avengers feel even tho generally this series has more of an ITC vibe than the genteel madness of the Rigg/Thorson seasons

Not going to do individual comments on the remaining four episodes as I’ve found them all deeply disappointing on this rewatch. A rather sad end to 10 glorious years of Jeremy Brett’s Holmes

Formula potboiler but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with that. Lon Chaney jr in a moralistic crime drama that reminds me of the unexpectedly excellent Whistler box set that came out the other year

The Dying Detective. Does anyone else fail to remember that Hugh Bonneville used to act under the name Richard Bonneville? Me neither. And whatever happened to Susannah Harker? She was all over British drama at one point. (And a very fine Sapphire to David Warner’s Steel)

The Three Gables. I had practically zero recollection of either this episode or the story it’s (loosely) based on. Jeremy seems bloated and sluggish throughout, lying down or standing still mostly. Always good to see the old rogue Peter Wyngarde though

Not gory enough to be a horror. Not really a slasher. Reminds me of too many other gaslighting thrillers to be that entertaining. Even Roddy McDowall is a bit wasted
