For instance, Kim Petras transitioned as a kid. She's a Grammy-winning pop star. She was able to pursue that dream *because* she transitioned young and wasn't forced to go through a testosterone-driven puberty. If she had, her voice would be completely different. She'd look completely different.

Here’s what opponents of this care don’t want you to think too hard about: puberty is not a neutral waiting period. It permanently changes your body. For a trans girl forced to go through testosterone-driven puberty, that means developing a deeper voice, broader shoulders, more pronounced brow and jaw, and facial hair. For a trans boy forced through estrogen-driven puberty, it means breast development, wider hips, and a shorter stature. These changes are, for the most part, irreversible. Trans adults who transition later in life often spend years and thousands of dollars trying to undo what their natural puberty did to their bodies, with limited success. Puberty blockers exist precisely to press pause, to give kids and their families time to figure things out before permanent changes set in. They’ve been used for decades to treat precocious puberty in cisgender children without controversy. But when a trans kid takes the exact same medication for a slightly different reason, suddenly it’s “chemical castration” and politicians want to throw doctors in prison.

David Brooks: Yes, I can't believe anybody — people are voting on this. Like, there are some QAnon people who are upset. And there are people in the Trump administration who did exactly what Jonathan said. But I just can't believe any vote — people vote and they make decisions about politics based on their real lives, not some crazy conspiracy theory. And every August, we — Washington goes crazy with some stupid story. And then in September, we think, what was that all about? And so this year, we're a little early. We're doing it in July. But the idea that there's something there incriminating Donald Trump, his friendship with Epstein ended in 2004. The Democrats, Joe Biden administration, they had these files for four years. You think, if there had been something, you think they would have done something. The Justice Department, the courts, they have all said there's nothing actionable here. And so the problem is that — what Jonathan described, and then that Donald Trump went ballistic about it and ordered his own administration to somehow solve the problem. And then the underlying problem is that America seems to go through child abuse panics with some regularity. When I was a baby reporter, there was something called the McMartin preschool case in Manhattan Beach, California, where an entire preschool was accused of this gigantic sex ring with children and the trial that went on for years before everybody was acquitted because there was nothing there. But there's something about child abuse which is so horrific, it seems to captures people's minds and especially conspiracy mongers. (Crosstalk) David Brooks: Yes. Jonathan Capehart: And so that's also what we shouldn't lose sight of in this whole conversation. While, politically-, in Washington, we're all talking about how this has damaged the president, how Democrats are trying to take — use it to their advantage. At the root of this were girls as young as 12 who were trafficked and abused by Jeffrey Epstein and by Ghislaine Maxwell. And that should — we should never lose sight of that. David Brooks: Yes, that's a good point. And that's one of the reasons they don't want to release the grand jury, because it's incriminating sometimes to the witnesses, to their families, pictures of them with their faces blacked out, with their clothing on. So that's a very good point. Geoff Bennett: And I hear you say this does not represent a shift in the loyalty calculus among Donald Trump's core supporters. David Brooks: I would be shocked. I would be shocked. But there's obviously an active group around MAGA itself that they care. But I — people vote based on their lives, not on anything else.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee continues to experiment with an occasionally odd Al-driven ad strategy this cycle, this time in Maine. Earlier this month, the Senate GOP campaign arm dropped Meet Team Ossoff's Illegals, an atonal pastiche of an NFL broadcast targeting the Georgia Democratic senator. This 30-second spot, The Janet Mills Collection, singles out Maine's Democratic governor — who is running to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins — for her stance on transgender rights. In the fuzzy, lo-fi style of a 1980s infomercial, an affectless female voice coos about Mills' "confusing" suite of gender policies, such as "forc[ing] girls to compete against biological males," and says she comes with a "no parent-permission required estrogen kit." Though Mills did sign into law a 2023 bill allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to receive gender-affirming therapy, in certain contexts without parental consent, the child depicted injecting drugs with a comically oversized vintage syringe behind his parents' backs looks to be much younger than that. Nothing Mills has ever actually said makes it into this all-AI spot, which, in the language of a nostalgic mass-media idyll, depicts Maine's sitting governor as a creepy drug pusher. The Trump administration has also reportedly discussed a plan in which the FBI would consider transgender suspects as a subset of its “Nihilistic Violent Extremists” threat category, giving the administration political and media cover to target trans people.
