For some time, people assumed that while the models are incredibly expensive to train, the computational cost of inference would eventually become very low. So you could imagine running inference on the edge, on all sorts of low-powered devices.

It's pretty amazing to see that there are now at least 3 open weight models (deepseek, qwen an marco-o1) that can do chain of thought reasoning as good as (sometimes better) @OpenAI's o1-preview only *3 months* after it was launched.
The lead does not seem so big to me.
