#TBT: William Gilmer was a United States Navy Captain who served as both the 22nd and 24th Naval Governor of Guam. His administration proved controversial because of the control he exercised over the activities of the island. He outlawed alcohol, smoking, and whistling. He died on January 8, 1955.

#TBT: On December 18, 1931, HJ Res 149 was introduced by Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner, Félix Córdova Dávila, to reflect the original Spanish name and the will of the local people. The anglicized spelling "Porto Rico" had been used by the US government since the Treaty of Paris in 1898.

#TBT: Massacre Bay, located on Tutuila Island in American Sāmoa, is home to the village of Aʻasu. The bay holds historical significance, marked by an 1883 monument commemorating the Frenchmen who lost their lives there on December 11, 1787, as depicted here.

#TBT: Benjamin Franklin Tilley was an American Naval officer who was the first acting governor of American Samoa as well as the territory's first naval governor, serving until November 27, 1901. He negotiated a deed of cession with the local powers to ensure a formal transfer of control to the US.
