& @ventrella.bsky.social, on watching your video explanation of Clusters (archive.org/details/clus...):

you might get a kick out of @cynthiarudin.bsky.social's description of her lab's #PaCMAP algorithm, which is the rising new hotness in dimensionality reduction :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD-u...

h/t to the @radxchange.bsky.social foundation calls (in particular @glenweyl.bsky.social and Luis Razo for sharing generously on the open calls) -- for inspiration on the general idea of modelling humans/values with attractive-repulsive force simulations.

And further, if this #particlelife data could somehow be a proxy for real opinion data (agree/disagree/pass), then it might also help me evaluate the tooling, via easy synthetic data of high #complexity (since the particle life simulator creates data w emergent subtle structure)
patcon.bsky.social
My loose curiosity is whether running these simulations in higher dimensions (beyond 3D), then using dimensional reduction to bring them down to 2D -- whether those simulations might reproduce something akin to the maps of high dimensional space opinion space (of human values)...

Inspired by @ventrella.bsky.social's Clusters demo, I'm exploring how to add an arbitrary number of dimensions to #particlelife and/or #particlelenia simulators... patcon.github.io/Clusters-n-d...

yaaay to more DR literacy. Speaking of which, just got this working today, and there's a janky experimental interface for cycling between different projections while painting:

@ryegan.bsky.social btw what's your angle/entry into pol.is as your focus? :) or do you have identities in other platforms (like GitHub) that I could follow?

I'm very much a learner, but you're maybe asking if aspects of matrix factorisation approaches to dimensionality reduction apply here. But LocalMAP is a KNN approach, with a matrix factorisation initialisation. h/t @lelandmcinnes.bsky.social for his attempts to describe these youtu.be/9iol3Lk6kyU

I recall from that other video I shared that it was now possible to add new data points into the map, but I don't think it's designed to situate new data. ParamRepulsor is a parametric version of the algorithm that I haven't played with, which I have stronger confidence it can fit/predict new data
patcon.bsky.social
They loosely map to PCA's principal components, just because that initialises the first layout, but PaCMAP (and its child LocalMAP, which is what you're seeing in that prototype) is essentially running an attractive-repulsive force simulation in 2D, using forces determined by HD space

However, on our website, in “Demands” you can take this poll: pol.is/2hzna7ntca
We encourage people to take this poll so we know what people are willing to strike for. If you don’t see your cause, then add it, so others can vote.

Hi! I'm building a tool for doing more in-depth exploration of polis data using more advanced algorithms and user-friendly interfaces. You interested to see how your data looks in it?

Hi! Thanks for checking it out :) Axes are about as meaningful as North vs South on maps... it means something subtle, but the shape of the land/manifold is more important. The meaning is in [k-nearest] neighbor relationships between participants, more than much about axes :)

Hey @rude1.blacksky.team @zariajalan.bsky.social if you'd like me to load the data into this perspective map tool, so you & the community can explore together & make sense of things, just lemme know. Happy to help with offline version, to see what's in there first ❤️

We also run a weekly call (more generally on tools, math experimentation, and process around pol.is), which I'd be so grateful for your participation in! :) polislike.short.gy/notes

I'm building a thing within the orbit of @metagov.bsky.social. Folks in that community with experience and enthusiasm for pol.is, they have been looking for partners on the ground to explore #polislike tools. I would love to be in touch 🙏🏻
