i think instead of asking how to move on completely from america forever everyone should be asking how to stem the tide of rw populism coordinating attacks on our alliances and what authoritarians stand to gain from it. it's happening in germany, france and the UK and it's happening here

america deserves consequences for its behavior but i politely ask western countries to see that what's happening in america is the result of a global right wing nationalist uprising that is occurring within and outside themselves as well

i think europe is right to be upset and distrusting of us for the near future but it's another thing entirely when they talk about it as a problem with *our* temperament instead of a tragic casualty of a global age of chaos, something *they* are not immune to

i think it's ok that roberts feels this way. it's not an ideal response but it is a natural one to seeing how overwhelming the situation is and it's hard to ask for an ideal response from someone who is very obviously going through it

as an addendum i want to say that pointing out bad things are happening and caveats to small wins isn't even dooming at least imo. i only think it crosses that threshold when it's suggested that we're all just waiting for an inevitable end that'll come at any moment
