This South Side Weekly report on the Chicago building raid is well worth reading. Most striking to me are the indications of collusion between federal authorities and the building owner and management to effect a mass eviction at the blighted property. southsideweekly.com/federal-agen...

Breaking news: Nearly a quarter of FBI agents across the country are currently reassigned to immigration enforcement.

The large number of reassignments reflect a vast reshaping of the agency and could put other priorities at risk.
A quarter of FBI agents are assigned to immigration enforcement, per FBI data
Nearly a quarter of FBI agents are currently reassigned to immigration enforcement, with the number climbing above 40 percent in the bureau’s largest field offices.

Given the number of nation states running troll farms to destabilize the US I’m currently slightly suspicious of weird/surprising takes on social media.

Not sure that helps tho

Folks, if ICE shot a pastor in the head with a pepper ball on camera, what do you think they do to people behind closed doors?

Regarding nonviolence making you a more palatable victim when abused, I remember them discussing that this was consciously used during the civil rights movement. That people walked into situations expecting physical abuse, the goal was to sway public opinion.

This was iirc specifically about the times that it failed, or rather when democracy prevailed, but I can’t for the life of me find it, so we’re basing this on my faulty memory

Basically make some of the radicalized people say: they shouldn’t have done that to the priest or the frog, they weren’t hurting anyone. Maybe this has gone too far, these people don’t seem dangerous. They don’t look like terrorists.

An ICE agent in Portland, OR, targeted a frog-suited protester’s air intake valve with pepper spray — a tactic that medical experts say could have been life-threatening.

So a tip was to keep an open door for «defectors» and to use nonviolence as a tool to emphasize, shine a light on, their mistreatment. An example of the second is for example the priest they shot in the face with some sort of chemical weapon the other day.

For soldiers interviewed they said they were afraid that someone they knew was in the crowd, like a family member. For empathy for protesters it grew when they saw violence toward people who were clearly nonviolent.

Gah, I can’t find it. Ok, from memory: a key moment in stopping a fascist takeover is if/when the troops refuse to fire on the population. Another is when public opinion shifts to empathize with the protesters. And both are about humanizing the other.

I could find it, but if/when I do I’ll post it… hm… maybe I already did… one sec

I’m not sure I understand. This idea was basically based on what I remember of an interview with a scholar on how to reverse democratic backsliding and… I should probably find it before I try to describe what she said.

«Plenary authority, with its sweeping, unchecked assumption of power, has previously been compared to the powers to rule by decree forced through by the governments of dictators, including Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.»
