I think that Murakami understood that his subject--and his talent--was a kind of bookend to the literary century that Joyce started with Ulysses. Toru Okada refutes all the useless, priapic self-pity that characterizes Bloom, even while they share the exact same kind of (very 20th-century) quest.

Getting stuck causes players to explore the world.

Dying causes players to think about what they're doing.

An "impossible" situation causes players to learn how the game works and eventually achieve the impossible.

We need to be able to design *some* games around these fundamental ideas.

BoF2 has one of the most brilliant intros of all time. It gets REAL messy after that, but hey. BoF3 had a pretty metal opener, too.
