it's by far the strongest pilot, IMO. strong opening, sets the stakes and establishes the character arc for Sisko immediately, says some unusually profound things about trauma and recovery by 1990s standards, and creates an interesting tension if the viewer's already familiar with Picard and TNG

what stops it from being flawless for me is the muddled storytelling around the Prophet. didn't fully work imo. but that ending more than makes up for it... the reason I haven't checked out the book is knowing it doesn't have that ending. so beautiful. I've never wept like that at TV before.

I regularly think about how this was tried in Vermont but rolled back because of the cost, and wonder if it could work in a state with a bigger economy, like Mass. I think ERISA also makes it difficult for states to enact single-payer systems, so it helps to have a friendly administration in place
