In 1838-1839, thousands of Cherokee women, men, and children died on a forced march from their homelands in the Appalachian Mountains to Oklahoma Territory. Some did survive the journey, and the Cherokee Nation is centered in Oklahoma today.

This painting was shown in the 2024 Cherokee Homecoming Art Show in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The title is both literal and metaphorical.

Contemporary Cherokee regalia includes the tear dress and ribbon shirt, worn by these young Cherokees.

The dancer in this painting is actually also a United States Marine. This dance is traditionally a spiritual preparation to fend off an enemy. Today it can also be a call to put on spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-18).
