All sorts: classical guitar, jazz, literature, movies, tech, politics (liberal & internationalist), multilingual.
Why shouldn’t racists or flat-earthers be heard?

Journalists have set themselves up as indirect censors and opinion shapers. Theroux’s approach is much more illuminating.

Captcha has quietly introduced an IQ element into the puzzles. Below 120 the FT isn’t for you. Above 80 , Fox prefers you not to waste their electricity.

Weird capitalisation in the headline. Ships Impossibly Appearing could be a 1980s synth duo.

Well said.

Sometimes we need reminding that success comes to decent (not necessarily perfect) people too.

It’s called Fascist Chic.

Both sides again, I see.

Which one?

LLMs and coding assistants have revived my interest in old projects abandoned because the effort wasn’t worthwhile.

But how to hijack attention.
1. Novelty
2. Repetition
3. Riding social wave
4. Use readymade intuitions.
5. Easy participation.
6. Relatable drama archetype. DvsGoliath, etc.
7. Speed
Not sure what I’m talking about at this point, but it’s very important & insightful. I really should be working

The missing pieces in liberal arsenal is usually not heart or brain. It is gut, or guts. The moral high ground is a dead end.

We’re simple creatures looking for indirect signals of human qualities such as boldness & tenacity. Cleverness obscures those signals, transgression amplifies them

Kick-ass liberalism is a thing. Electorates are ready for it.

I wonder whether there is a pattern of use where GenAI is not for executing these tasks. Cost, efficiency, repeatability, etc.

Instead it is used to build a personal toolkit w/ orchestration in ephemeral completion-wizard style.

Efficient tool use is considered a sign of intelligence in animals.

Feels like the wrong debate.

Western society is balanced on a fulcrum with nazism at one end and justice at the other. Surprised this is not what burns inside all journalists and commentators.

You’re right. The will to fight is necessary. To make it effective we need organisation. Liberals don’t make good troops, sadly, or we would make our numbers count.

Also interested in the moral ramp. The idea that one’s sins become so gross that forgiveness or atonement are out of reach.

Cruelty must continue for terror of whatever reckoning awaits. Nightmare of Red Army doing exactly as German forces had done made surrender impossible.

Some of the passages most resonant w/ me are about how people come to regard extreme cruelty as their right. Or, at least, a duty in a wider cause that justifies everything.

[…] a gunshot.

“Jesus Effing Christ, Jo!” By now you’re screaming down the phone. “Pick up the goddam phone, y’hear? Freakin’ cripes. You promised me. 4 o’clock, you said. 4. It’s 3.55. There was time & I never let you down before.”

Silence.

“Jo?”

Silence.

“Goddam you Jo! I love you.”
