This is mistaken. First, the government must show that it controls immigration. That's the priority. Only then can immigration quantity and quality be debated.

No. A trade agreement can only be made by Congress, even when it has given trade promotion authority to the administration, which it hasn't in this case. This will probably be a limited deal on some tariffs. The Washington Post should know better.

The Economist is right: basic and essential state services such as policing, justice, and defence, have declined so far as to become largely inoperative. This is far more dangerous for the social compact than, say, unsatisfactory free health care.

80 yrs ago today, Buchenwald concentration camp was liberated by the US 6th Armored and 80th Infantry Divisions. Col. Coe Kerr and my father, Free French Capt. Peter Chatenay, both of the 80th Infantry Division, reached the camp just after the first tanks.

I remember Senator Inouye visiting the New Hebrides (Vanuatu, today) with a delegation from Hawaï, probably in 1977. A Nisei soldier, he had lost an arm in Italy. Many Nisei, fighting admirably, were wounded or lost their lives in Italy and France. As a Frenchman and a European, I remember that.
#OTD in 1943, the Seattle Times reports that 2,500 Japanese Americans from Hawaii are heading to Mississippi for basic training. As members of the 100th Battalion, they will join mainland Japanese American soldiers of the 442nd RCT for training at Camp Shelby.
