This government for sure. Perhaps when it all goes away and the constitutional order devolves completely into an authoritarian kakistocracy there maybe those willing to imagine a better way.

For sure, but perhaps a new approach in light of current tech and hyper polarized media landscape that lives and breathes misinformation and disinformation can bring the original 1949 vision into the 21st century.

I stand corrected but thought the fairness doctrine provided some parameters for covering issues of public importance, and presenting those issues in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced, including contrasting viewpoints.

Plato argued democracy contains the conditions for its own undoing. Democratic freedom slides into excess, and the desire for absolute liberty eventually creates the conditions for tyranny. Corporate media is increasingly captured and used to erode and eventually destroy constitutional norms.

And wile you’re at it.. bundle it into a huge omnibus bill that kills Citizens United, and reinstates the Fairness Doctrine to include cable and the rest of it.. what other democracy- saving laws should be in there?

Unfortunately that support has been the equivalent of “thoughts and prayers.” If only Ukraine had been given the right tools to defend itself from the beginning and to make the whole gambit too costly for Putin to continue.. we’d be in very different place today.

People say aging rockers lack self-awareness. That they should bow out quietly. But aging doesn’t suck any more than a sunset sucks. It just changes the light. Sure the bodies have shifted but that’s not failure. That’s the human arc.

US military bases in Europe are on sovereign soil. Germany, for example, retains full sovereignty over its territory and could in principle terminate or revise arrangements under which US bases operate. Or at least signal that US presence is a privilege not a right,

Wrong reaction.. EU needs to signal strength and some leverage. This document normalizes the idea that Europe must plan for a future in which the US is not a reliable ally and may be actively interfering in its internal political order.

Trump is goading the EU. It’s time they started to flex and push back on the “impotent” narrative. Germany for one could signal US bases are not a right but a privilege. They could start with tighter constraints on how US forces operate on German soil and ramp up from there.
