The racist attack on a synagogue in Manchester today is horrifying. The Jewish community should have been able to observe the holiest day of the Jewish calendar peacefully.
I want to extend my thoughts and solidarity to the Jewish community in Manchester, in Southport, and across the country today.

This morning I asked DEFRA about the announced 50 million pounds of investment into Southport Wastewater Treatment Works which will reduce the overflow discharges to just 3 per bathing season.

This morning I asked DEFRA about the announced 50 million pounds of investment into Southport Wastewater Treatment Works which will reduce the overflow discharges to just 3 per bathing season.
I’m appalled to see a fire on the pier overnight, but am very relieved that the emergency services did such a good job of putting it out before it did too much damage. I’ll be speaking with the fire and rescue service and other agencies today to find out precisely how the fire started.

Today in Parliament, I had the honour of thanking Sergeant Gregory Gillespie, PC Luke Holden, and PCSO Timothy Parry for their extraordinary bravery. Their quick actions during a tragedy in our community showcased true heroism. Thank you for everything you do!

The condition and closure of the Pier has been a huge source of concern for everyone in Southport over the last two and a half years, and whole community shares the desire for the Pier to be reopened.

This legacy project, to renovate, refurbish and remodel the gardens outside The Atkinson will be a flare of bright optimism for the future of Southport.

And during the interval, it was humbling to see the work the Salvation Army do with their foodbank and babybank. It’s awful that these services are needed after the austerity years, but I’m pleased that there’s help for those who need it.
