They aren’t the biggest but certainly some of the most characteristic. This one is likely over 1000 years old and they can grow to be over twice that age. They twist and turn, get buried in snow for half their lives but continuously emerge and shine and grow every spring. I love these trees.

Echo lake trailhead towards Lake Aloha is probably your easiest way in, and likely most popular. If you want to backpack then glen alpine trailhead to Gilmore lake is a great weekend trip and sets you up to summit Mt. Tallac. Rockbound pass is tough but a really cool way in as well.

Thank you! I feel like picking favorite spots in the Sierra is like choosing a favorite child (if I had them). Each spot has its own personality and pros and cons. It’s definitely one of them. Dusy Basin is another. I also love Desolation wilderness simply because I’m so close. It’s just all gravy!
