I won't defend The Final Frontier as being some sort of underappreciated masterpiece. It is, objectively, the worst of the TOS films.
That said, I still love it. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy shine in what is an otherwise messy and silly movie and Sybok remains one of my favorite Trek villains.

Setting aside RTD's complete lack of subtlety, the episode feels like a really messy collage of ideas that don't quite come together.
If you set your expectations at rock bottom, it's entertaining enough.. but how in the hell anyone thought this was the episode to open the season with is beyond me.
