Tommy Dickey (1945-2025). When he started out, oceanography was pursued in disciplinary silos, bio-optical oceanography did not exist, and robotic observation of global ocean biogeochemistry was not yet a dream. Tommy was central in getting us where we are today.🌊

Same for me - NASA Goddard Space Flight Center - summer 1997. I watched the SeaWiFS launch from Gene Feldman’s office and worked with Watson Gregg - incredible mentorship and inspiration. 🚀 🌎
My science career was greatly advanced by a summer undergraduate internship at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), where I met NASA and Columbia University (LDEO) scientists who served first as mentors and then became scientific colleagues. Summer REUs can be transformative. 🌊
