another update, the recovery image doesn't support a full reinstall unless you have a recovery point! ended up using wine to extract the drivers from the msi installer and loading them in while using the regular win 11 installer

I've been made aware that they publish special recovery images for the surface laptops support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfac...

but still... ship your own dang drivers with your own dang OS!
