Home Secretary tells Sky News that “there is a gap in the law” when it comes to frequent, repeated protests on the same issue. Hence she will be giving police greater powers to move them to another location or time.
paulbrand.bsky.social
Home Secretary says:

“Large, repeated protests can leave sections of our country, particularly religious communities, feeling unsafe, intimidated and scared to leave their homes. This has been particularly evident in relation to the considerable fear within the Jewish community”.

BREAKING: The Home Office is giving police new powers to restrict repeat protests like pro-Palestine marches.

Police can consider the ‘cumulative impact’ of protests on an area and could ban the protest / force it to move elsewhere.

Previous govts have taken a similar ‘sticking plaster’ approach, while promising reform that never came.

Health and Social Care Secretary is promising an extra £500m today to improve pay and conditions in the care sector.

Care workers have been promised a better deal since the sector was put under the spotlight during the pandemic.

But long-term, genuine reform is still years off.

Hamas has to agree to have no role in the future governance of Gaza. So question is whether they’re willing to accept their own demise. Otherwise Israel will “finish the job” regardless.

“This can be done the easy way, or it can be done the hard way, but it will be done” says Netanyahu.
paulbrand.bsky.social
Prime Minister Netanyahu confirms that Israel supports America’s peace plan.

“It will bring back to Israel all of our hostages, dismantle Hamas’s military capabilities and ensure Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel”, he says.

BREAKING: President Trump says all parties - including Israel - have accepted his plan for peace in the Middle East.

The only remaining party to give its verdict is Hamas, he says.

Theme of speech is how to remain an “open, tolerant, generous country” - a triad which she repeats.

Mahmood argues that retaining those values - important to Labour members - means having control of borders and crime. A sort of political tough love.
paulbrand.bsky.social
NEW: Home Sec Shabana Mahmood hits out at far right.

“In their view of this country I have no place. They are heirs to the skin heads and p*ki bashers of old”.

“Patriotism - a force for good - is turning into something smaller which struggles to believe I can be truly English”.
paulbrand.bsky.social
Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering
paulbrand.bsky.social
Mahmood warns Labour members “you may not always like what I do”.

She says she will have to question “Assumptions and legal constraints that have lasted for a generation or more.”

But she says that’s the way to preserve a tolerant country and hold back the far right.
paulbrand.bsky.social
But Mahmood says that Labour does have to face head-on the fact that people feel the country is out of control.

Otherwise “our vision of a, tolerant, generous country will wither”.

She argues - as she did to me in her first iv last week - that means securing borders.
