I can't emphasize how shocked I am by the radio propagation today. I'm transmitting 17-19 watts *at most* on a magnetic loop antenna inside my house, surrounded by hellacious RFI, and I've made contact with two operators in Japan today on 10M.

I don’t know what’s happened but suddenly the east coast is on fire for me the last couple of days on 10M (I can never make reliable contact with them at night on 20/40M, it’s mostly the Pacific Northwest).
Oddly, everywhere west of the Mississippi is quiet.
I even made contact with Cuba today

I haven’t been to Comic-Con in 15 years and it funny to see how the surrounding area has changed to accommodate the event. The vibe shifted from “oh yeah, that’s going on right now” to “keep out the cars and build giant themed areas”
It’s both nicer and kind of weird at the same time

I was going through old issues of Wired from the '90s and gotta love that graphic design fad featuring dense, dark collages with duotone photos and multiple-typefaces.
It was everywhere for a couple of years, especially in places where they wanted to project an edgy, underground aesthetic

I have a DMR radio whose configuration has been an adventure in itself, but I also made a hotspot from a pi zero + MMDVM hat, and installed pi-star to act as a hotspot/gateway for the radio.
After a couple of weeks, I’m hearing and talking to people from around the world on my cheapie radio

I made this Yagi antenna out of PVC and measuring tape to see if I can catch one of the NOAA satellites (if I’m lucky) and possibly download their image data (if I’m extraordinarily lucky).
It’s extremely easy to tear down/transport, as well as adjust the tape elements

On the recent hike it was pretty hazy out and the vegetation is starting to dry out. Nice view of the San Antonio dam.
