If you know any international students in the United States, a colleague of mine made a flier to help students with finding an immigration lawyer. Please share and circulate among your networks:
I'm an international student! How do I find an immigration lawyer?

Where to look:
-Free: Check immigrationlawhelp.org and search by state.
-Paid: ALIA (the American Immigration Lawyers Association) and NIPNLG (the National Immigration Project) maintain directories of immigration attorneys.

What to prepare:
Bring any immigration documents you have (visas, letters from USCIS, etc.) to your first meeting with an attorney.

Avoid scams:
-Ask for proof that the provider is a licensed attorney or otherwise recognized or accredited by the Department of Justice
-Get a contract for legal services
-Never pay to access USCIS forms - they're free

Scan the code or visit https://linktr.ee/lawyerinfo for more resources + info

*this flyer is not legal advice*

So is it an American thing if I just run through the lights at night?

That's how I know you're new here...*never* forget to take the oyajis into account (they'll be the first to remind you)

Tried it myself and got these results, so I'll catch you on the flip side of this wormhole
Series of Google search results related to the Ottoman Empire in space

In my experience, right of way always defers to the oyajis because they never stop their cars for anything but traffic lights, so I'm personally good with keeping the lights

To be fair there are a lot of good Japan politics analysts over there, particularly writing in Japanese, but the English language discourse is as bad as ever
pauljnadeau.bsky.social
Anyway here's the state of Japan politics discourse on the other site
When I was teaching "Japan in the foreign imagination" at Keio and other universities, I always said

"The key to writing about Japan is to never let facts stand in your way."

Current writing about Takaichi Sanae shows my formula to be widely accepted and practiced.

Koizumi should never run in LDP leadership elections after this. Never. Again.

There’s a lot in Bari Weiss’ 2023 FedSoc speech that merits scrutiny but I think the Times did a disservice by closing with this quote — given what she says immediately after. fedsoc.org/commentary/f...

Could exist, but pushing back on trade would mean compromising on other Trump priorities that they support
pauljnadeau.bsky.social
Then there's also the fact that no one really votes their interests anymore, if they ever did <waves at red state farmers>. Sure, a lot of sectors and exporters are being hurt by Trump's tariffs, but color me skeptical that they'll ever switch their vote in the near- to medium-term.

Instead, they're quixotically trying to rebuild the New Deal coalition and using economic concerns to do that. While that draws them away from redoubling on cities, the way elections are structured for better or worse means you can't win with cities alone, so it's off to the Rust Belt
pauljnadeau.bsky.social
Thing is, political support for free trade/protectionism follows which sectors and demographics make up the political base, and if Democrats are the party of the cities (as they seem to be) and since cities benefit most from free trade, it follows that Democrats *should* be the party of free trade
Will the Democrats Become the Party of Free Trade?
Another partisan reversal on trade presents itself.

There's a lot to like in this post by @simonlester.com, but his reiteration that trade can promote peace is something the economic security hawks need to remember. The whole point of the liberal economic order was to use interconnectedness to build security, not undermine it as the hawks insist
Beware the "Securitization" of Trade Policy
In recent years, U.S. trade policy has seen a creeping takeover by "security" concerns. The precise scope of these concerns is unclear, but they appear to cover both the traditional aspects of militar...

I remember having a conversation maybe last year about what the equivalent Japanese vegetable would be. Maybe it was komatsuna, but I'm open to suggestions

Meanwhile the LDP posts she's named so far feel less like a unity slate and more like an Aso Taro victory lap. We'll see what happens with the cabinet, but it's starting to feel more like a revenge tour than an effort to reunite the party
pauljnadeau.bsky.social
Worth noting Prof. Curtis can still fill a room at LDP headquarters when he comes to Japan. He's well-connected in the party and has lots of friends in senior leadership, so I doubt he says any of this lightly or casually.

It's definitely not beyond the realm of possibility
